What FIRE means

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. The core idea is to build a portfolio large enough that your investments can cover your ongoing spending, giving you more freedom over how and when you work. For some people that means stopping work entirely; for others it means part-time work, lower-stress work, or simply having stronger financial security.

The 4% rule is a planning shortcut that says a portfolio may support annual withdrawals of about 4% in the first year of retirement, with later withdrawals adjusted for inflation. That is why FIRE targets are often estimated as annual expenses multiplied by 25. It is useful for scenario planning, but it is not a guarantee, because real outcomes depend on market returns, inflation, taxes, fees, and your spending flexibility.
